The phenomenon of lost luggage continues to plague the public carrier, airline, ship, or train travel industries at an increasing and alarming rate. In the year 2006, in the United States alone, checked baggage was misdirected, left behind, or lost at an average for 1 out of 150 people. Also that year, airlines around the world mishandled or lost about 1 percent of the 3 billion checked bags which equates to 30 million missing pieces of luggage. Estimates are more severe for 2007.
